Celebrity and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres recently revealed her osteoporosis diagnosis in her Netflix special “For Your Approval.”

In her show, she told her audience that a “stupid bone density test” revealed that she has “full-blown osteoporosis”

While the tabloids are focused on her other two diagnoses, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank Ellen for sharing her recent diagnosis about her bone health. An excerpt from her Netflix special “For Your Approval”:

I don’t even know how I’m standing up right now. I’m like a human sandcastle. I could disintegrate in the shower… It’s hard to be honest about aging and seem cool. I had excruciating pain one day and I thought I tore a ligament or something and I got an MRI and they saidNo, it’s just arthritis.’  I said, How did I get that? And he said,Oh it just happens at your age.’”

No Ellen, your bones won’t dissolve in the shower.

You aren’t a human sandcastle, and you are not alone. According to the BHOF 54 million Americans have, or are at risk for osteoporosis. However, the good news is that there are many therapies available to rebuild weak bones. Medical professionals who have been doing this for the past three decades.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes brittle and weak bones. Various factors play a role in its severity, including genetics and most of all age. Osteoporosis is a slow invisible progression of bone loss that will never recover without specific medications. Experts estimate that it affects one in three women over the age of 50. Because of its invisible nature, most people won’t know they have osteoporosis until they fracture.

Well if it’s invisible, how do I know I have osteoporosis?

It starts with that “stupid bone density test” called a DEXA. It scans your body with an x-ray and determines bone density in key areas like your hip and spine. Healing a fracture and rebuilding bone takes time.

Most of these medications work to prevent bone loss, but EVENITY actively builds bone. However, building bones takes time, so get in contact with your physician to get the process started.

So if you have recently been diagnosed with low bone mass, ask your doctor to refer you to a Rheumatologist to review your DEXA scan and start treatment for your bone health ASAP.
